Everybody remembers their first time, right? I sure do.
After months of house hunting in the sellers’ market of 1986, my real estate agent called and said “Today you are going to buy a house.” I scoffed, having learned that disappointment was as much a part of the process as excitement.
Three hours later, having talked our way into what was supposed to have been a showing only for brokers, I had signed a contract for my bungalow. It was just what I wanted–near transportation, the lake and the Cubs.
It was more than I could afford, at least without some creative financing and parental backing. But that, too, is part of the first-time experience, taking a leap of faith into the financial unknown and hoping time will treat you well. It has.
Nearly 45 percent of all home buyers in the Chicago area last year were first-timers. The best advice I can recommend: Don’t be afraid to jump in. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.
