In the last three weeks of flooding, thousands of people have died in

Mozambique, and the death toll is expected to continue to rise. The Mozambique government estimates 200,000 people are homeless. Tens of thousands are stranded on hills, trees and rooftops, praying for rescue by one of the five helicopters donated by the South African government.

Washington’s response? A couple of million dollars. Whether due to Mozambique’s relative economic unimportance or another manifestation of a racist Africa policy, Americans should be ashamed of the Clinton administration’s refusal to help those truly in need.
