Edwin “Ted” McGann, 38, the owner of J.M. McGann and Co. plumbing, whose bustling energy made him a smiling fixture in his Southwest Side neighborhood, died of a heart attack Saturday, March 4, on the way to his Evergreen Park home after work. Mr. McGann visited businesses and commercial customers around the Chicago area, upgrading plumbing and putting in fire sprinklers and water systems. He followed his father into the hectic family business, at times seeming to live each day twice, taking his sons to 4 a.m. hockey practices and playing the game with them in the evening on the back-yard ice rink they made every winter. He split his summer evenings between back-yard barbecues and fishing or boating on rivers and streams in the area. “He had boundless energy, worked 12-hour days and came home to go fishing,” said his sister Maureen Ryan. “He burned his candle at both ends, and kind of bragged about it.” “Every day was huge to him,” added his wife, Bridget. In addition to his wife and sister, Mr. McGann is survived by three sons, Sean, Patrick and Kyle; his parents, James and Joan McGann; four other sisters, Margaret Mary McGann, Kathleen Loftus, Joan McGann and Erin Maiorca; and two brothers, James and Michael. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Andrew J. McGann & Son funeral home, 10727 S. Pulaski Rd., Chicago. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 10234 S. Washtenaw Ave., Chicago.
