John A. Boyce, 89, a retired architect who designed the auditorium of Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, died Sunday, March 5, in Fairview Baptist Home in Downers Grove. Mr. Boyce, a longtime resident of Clarendon Hills, was a partner in the Chicago firm of Perkins and Will. A talented artist, he intended to pursue a career as an illustrator but chose architecture during the Depression years, feeling that it would provide a more stable and secure profession, said his son Richard. Born in St. Albans, Vt., Mr. Boyce graduated with a degree in architecture from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and for a short time set up a practice in Barre, N.Y. A call from a friend brought him to Chicago, where his work focused principally on schools and churches, said his son. An avid golfer, Mr. Boyce continued his work after retirement, designing sets for the Theater of Western Springs. He also designed the stained glass windows of Community Presbyterian Church in Clarendon Hills, where he was a member. During World War II, Mr. Boyce served in the Navy and participated in the D-Day invasion of Europe. Survivors include another son, Allan; four grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Schaaf. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in The Elliston Funeral Home, 1st and Grant Streets, Hinsdale. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Community Presbyterian Church, 39 N. Prospect Ave., Clarendon Hills.
