Trying to motivate a slumping club for a playoff run, the Detroit Pistons on Monday fired coach Alvin Gentry.

Gentry was replaced on an interim basis by assistant George Irvine, the man the Pistons hope can pull the 28-30 team from the funk of a three-game slide, seven losses in 10 games and an 11-game road skid.

In a season of blown leads–Detroit led in the fourth quarter in 10 of its last 13 losses–and perceived underachievement, General Manager Rick Sund said the club concluded enough was enough.

“We’ve watched these slumps, we’ve said just give it more time, just give it more time. Well, time is running out,” Sund said of his team, seventh in the Eastern Conference, fourth in Central Division.
