Stephen M. Anson, 58, of Indian Head Park, the president of a Chicago-based trucking company his uncle started with a horse and wagon, died in his home Saturday, March 4, of cancer. Mr. Anson’s company, J.L. Scheffler Transport, operated out of the West Fulton Street loading docks his uncle bought in 1917 and expanded in the years that followed. Mr. Anson started working in the company’s offices more than 40 years ago, handling licensing and insurance on the trucks the company owned. He became president of the firm in the early 1970s. A hard worker, he put in long hours at the office, spending six days a week there for much of his life. Though he knew how to drive a truck, he almost never did, instead he would spread his paperwork across several desks in the office, either hunching over them or ambling back and forth between the office and the docks. “It was his job to keep everything running, and running smooth,” said his brother John, the company’s vice president in charge of operations. “He did it.” In addition to his brother, Mr. Anson is survived by his wife, Kathleen; two daughters, Janet Lewandowski and Mary Colton; another brother, William; and two grandchildren. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. James at Sag Bridge Catholic Church, 10600 Archer Ave., Lemont.
