Enrollment for credit classes at McHenry County College is at a record level.

For the spring semester, enrollment increased by more than 10 percent over the last year to 5,234 students, according to Lisa Encarnacion, college spokeswoman.

MCC is the fourth fastest-growing community college in the state, behind Southeastern Illinois College, whose enrollment grew 18 percent to 2,537; Kishwaukee College, which grew 17.8 percent to 3,886; and Lake Land College, which grew 14.5 percent to 6,017, according to figures provided by MCC.

Each year, about 30,000 people are served by MCC, enrolling in credit and non-credit classes, working toward their high school equivalency certificates or enrolling in various other programs, Encarnacion said.

Nearly one-third of the county’s graduating high school class of 1999 enrolled at MCC last fall, according to college officials.
