John W. Dwyer, 81, of Glen Ellyn, a career U.S. Postal Service employee whose love of baseball reached back to the 1930s when he was a clubhouse boy for the Chicago Cubs, died Monday, March 6, in Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. “Oh, he loved baseball and the Cubs,” said his wife, Margaret Dwyer. Mr. Dwyer was born in Chicago and grew up near DePaul University. He worked in the logistics department of the Postal Service’s regional office in Chicago, retiring after 27 years of service. In World War II, Mr. Dwyer was a corporal in the Army, assigned to the 114th Infantry, 44th Division. He served in the European Theater and won a Bronze Star, said his wife. “He was a good and kind man who loved his family,” she said. Mr. Dwyer enjoyed bowling and was a member of American Legion Tattler Post 973 in Chicago. Other survivors include a daughter, Barbara Schremser; a son, John; and four grandchildren. Mass will be said at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in St. James the Apostle Catholic Church, 480 S. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn.
