Duane Mortenson, 78, a 32-year resident of Woodridge, died Tuesday, March 7, in his home. Mr. Mortenson was a pipe fitter for more than 20 years and worked for Pipefitters’ Union local 597. Because he worked for the union, he practiced his trade at several different job sites, including schools and power plants. “He enjoyed the challenges that came about in his work,” said his granddaughter, Shannon Long. “He was very hands-on and very active.” In addition to his work as a pipe fitter, Mr. Mortenson enjoyed creating sculptures. As a pipe fitter, he learned welding and other skills that helped him in his pursuit of art. He produced several metal sculptures, some of which he proudly exhibited at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. “He liked having them on display,” said his son Scott. Mr. Mortenson was born and raised in Moline. He was in the Navy during World War II and served aboard the USS Lexington and the USS Vulcan. While he was in the Navy, he attended a USO show in New Orleans, where he met his wife. They married and lived in New Orleans, but later moved to Illinois. Other survivors include his wife, Faith; two daughters, Linda Long and Donna Whitaker; another son, Bruce; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday in Toon Funeral Home, 4920 Main St., Downers Grove. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
