A $10,000 study will tell the village which parts of the wastewater treatment plant need fixing first.

The Village Board approved conducting the study this week at the request of new Public Works Director Paul Quinn, even though Village President John Geils said it will not enable the village to raise treatment rates to prepare for future repairs. Geils noted that trustees have rejected similar study proposals several times in the last few years.

But Quinn asserted that the system is old enough and patched enough that he needs the study to pinpoint the worst trouble spots and prepare to deal with them. “Several of the updates to the system extend back 50 years,” he said. “I’ll be more confident if I know what I’m dealing with.”

Engineering consultant firm B&W Design/Build of Crystal Lake will conduct the study this spring. Its proposal includes evaluating the current wastewater flow and how the village could pay for the work. The study results are expected in early May.
