Your March 1 editorial “Time for a yes vote on gay rights” is right on target. For the state of Illinois, or any state of the union for that matter, to fail to protect its lesbian and gay citizens from discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations is immoral and an abomination.
I do, however, take issue with the “gay rights” piece of the title. To speak of “gay rights,” I believe, fosters the notion that the homosexual population seeks special rights. Because this is a common objection voiced by many who oppose the Illinois Human Rights Act, I prefer to speak of “human rights” or “civil rights” for gays and lesbians.
