Thirteen trees planted in 1936 by famed conservationist Aldo Leopold and members of his family have been cut down and are to be used in a building that will be constructed using environmentally friendly techniques.
The 70-foot pines were removed Saturday from the family’s property through use of special logging techniques. The trees first had their branches stripped and then were felled to strike the ground without destroying neighboring birches and pines.
“Some of the trees were too close to their neighbors. We’re thinning those,” said Nina Leopold Bradley, who helped her father plant the pines. “Our aim is a healthy forest.”
