Veronica Cooper Converse, the widow of film star Gary Cooper, has died at 86.
Mrs. Converse, a native of Brooklyn, died Feb. 16 in her Manhattan home.
She had married Cooper in 1933. After his death in 1961, she married Dr. John Converse, a plastic surgeon who died in 1981.
Known as Rocky, she was the daughter of a governor of the New York Stock Exchange and occasionally worked as an actress.
She was an active fundraiser for the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University Medical Center.
In her youth, Mrs. Converse was a noted athlete; she was the California State Women’s Skeet Champion, a golfer, swimmer, scuba diver, surfer and tennis player.
She is survived by her daughter, Maria Cooper Janis.
