Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Hey, readers… the deadline for our KidNews writing contest is in ONE week! For the last time, here are the details:

J.K Rowling, author of the famous “Harry Potter” series, has provided us with the first line to a fictional story. Your job is to finish the story, which can be about anything (except Harry Potter. You can be more original than that…).

Rowling’s first line is: “If I had known better, I would never have opened the package that arrived unexpectedly that Thursday morning.”

Now it’s your turn. If you’re 8-15, you’re eligible. Stories must be 600 words max, including the first line. They must either be printed clearly and double-spaced or be typed. Be sure to include your first name, last initial, phone number (including area code) and hometown. Send us your entry by March 21 (THAT’S NEXT TUESDAY!) to: KidNews Story/Chicago Tribune, 5th Floor/435 N. Michigan Ave./Chicago, IL 60611.

Winners will be announced in May. The grand-prize winner will get a $100 gift certificate to Borders bookstore and a day at the Tribune, including a chat with the newspaper’s writing coach and lunch with the KidNews crew. Plus, the winner’s story will appear in KidNews, AND we’ll send a copy to J.K. Rowling (how cool is that?). Four runners-up will get $50 Borders certificates, and five honorable mentions will be sent hardcopy copies of the “Harry Potter” collection.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get inspired!
