I agree with your Feb. 23 editorial that the White House’s reaction to China’s threats against Taiwan is hardly rising to the level of occasion. The Clinton administration ought to respond in the most unequivocal manner that threats and the use of force against Taiwan will not be tolerated.
Taiwan is an independent country and is willing to negotiate with China under only one condition, that China stops treating her as a renegade province. The U.S. House overwhelmingly passed the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act this month. We urge the Senate to pass it and President Clinton to sign it into law. This act will increase the military tie between Taiwan and the U.S. It will also help increase the prospect for constructive communication between Taiwan and China.
Most important, China will think twice before trying to invade Taiwan. Without it, Taiwan is under a huge disadvantage against the big bully China, and peace in the pacific may be in jeopardy.
