Theresa Sciortino, 91, of Villa Park, and formerly of Bellwood, died Sunday, March 12, in her home. Born in Italy, Mrs. Sciortino recently had been a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Villa Park. She also was a member of St. John Chrystostom Church in Bellwood. She was a member of several organizations at the Bellwood church, including the Women’s Guild and Medical Missions. “Grandma was a very spiritual woman who lived her life for God,” said her granddaughter Pat Alam. “She was raised religious by her parents.” As a member of the Women’s Guild and Medical Missions, Mrs. Sciortino helped organize fundraisers and volunteered her time baking and performing other activities. Mrs. Sciortino immigrated to the United States when she was 3. Her parents moved her family from Italy to Tolono, Ill., and later to Pekin, Ill. Mrs. Sciortino later moved to the Chicago area. She married her late husband, Sam, in Pekin. “A priest told my grandfather that she would be a good catch,” Alam said. Mrs. Sciortino’s parents and her future husband’s parents had been acquainted in Italy years before the families emigrated from Europe. Mrs. Sciortino had six siblings, said Alam. “She took tremendous pride in her family,” Alam added. Besides Alam, Mrs. Sciortino is survived by two sons, Sam and Larry; a daughter, Catherine Pusateri; two brothers, Bernard and Anthony; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 229 S. Main St., Lombard. Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. in St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 330 N. Westmore St., Villa Park.
