Two children were killed and three others were injured this afternoon after a fire broke out in West Side house, fire officials said.

A 2-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl died in a fire that broke out shortly before noon in a two-story house at 2724 W. Lexington St., said fire department spokesman Tim Stokes.

A 76-year-old man is listed in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Burch said.

Two other victims were taken to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, Stokes said. Their conditions were not available.

Stokes said 48 firefighters extinguished the blaze, which also spread to the house next door, within a half-hour. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
