Chechen rebels have slipped through Russian lines and regrouped in unexpected places to attack government troops, a top military commander said Thursday.
Despite Russian claims to have the breakaway republic under control, Russian airborne troops commander Col. Gen. Georgy Shpak said the rebels “are constantly on the move, appearing in one village … or another.”
Russian forces battled hundreds of rebels across the mountains of Chechnya’s southern region Thursday. Small groups of rebels offered stiff resistance in the southern Chechen town of Komsomolskoye.
Russian artillery near Urus-Martan, a city to the northwest of Komsomolskoye, fired salvo after salvo at targets near the village, which Russia had claimed Wednesday it controlled.
