Central: At Haines City, Fla., Brian Moehler, scheduled to start the opener at new Comerica Park next month, gave up seven runs and 11 hits in four innings in the Detroit Tigers’ 9-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Brian Johnson, Carlos Beltran and Rey Sanchez each drove in two runs for the Royals, who had 17 hits.
East: If Ramon Martinez hadn’t earned a little latitude with his pitching, he’d have earned it with his last name. The 31-year-old elder brother of Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez was roughed up for seven runs, five of them earned, on eight hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings in a 7-4 loss to Minnesota in Ft. Myers, Fla. Martinez, who had major arm surgery a year ago, dropped to 2-1 this spring and saw his ERA rise from 1.50 to 5.83.
West: Olmedo Saenz hit a grand slam and David McCarty hit two home runs and drove in six runs as the Oakland Athletics, with six homers in all, beat San Diego 16-6. Catcher Ramon Hernandez also hit two homers and drove in three runs for the A’s, who have the best record in the majors this spring at 14-3. . . . Garret Anderson hit a pair of two-run homers and Troy Glaus had a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth as the Anaheim Angels rallied from a six-run deficit to beat San Francisco 9-8 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
