Classes were held at a South Side elementary school this afternoon several hours after gunshots were reported on the second floor of the building.

Police are still investigating the shooting, which occurred at Parkside Community Academy at 6934 S. East End Ave., about 8:20 a.m., 40 minutes before classes were scheduled to begin.

The shots were heard as teachers were arriving at the school and as a basketball team was practicing in the gymnasium.

Police said no one was injured, and they are looking for a suspect or suspects.

“There is security in the school,” said Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Paul Vallas. “The safest place for many of the kids is in the school. Whoever had the gun ran out of the school with the gun.”

Witnesses said two youths who were not students ran from the building after the shooting, according to a report on CLTV.

Three unfired .22 caliber bullets were found inside the school, but there was no evidence of bullet holes, according to a news release from the school district.
