The lights went out for about 7,500 South Side Commonwealth Edison customers Thursday afternoon when a contractor struck a power line, utility officials said.

The outage began just after 2 p.m. in an area bordered by 67th and 93rd Streets and between Yates and Indiana Avenues. The contractor, who was hired by another utility company, hit several feeder lines, a spokeswoman for Commonwealth Edison said.

About 1,100 homes and businesses were still without power at 7:30 p.m. ComEd was considering bringing portable generators into the area to provide power for those residents as the repair efforts continued.
