Nebraska ended a three-week search for a new men’s coach Wednesday by hiring Butler’s Barry Collier.

Collier took the Bulldogs to the NCAA tournament three of the last four years and nearly upset runner-up Florida in the opening round of this year’s tournament.

He has been considered the front-runner for the Cornhuskers post since he expressed interest last week.

Collier agreed late Tuesday to a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $200,000.

Collier replaces Danny Nee, who was fired March 13 after 14 seasons at Nebraska.

– Siena’s Paul Hewitt agreed to succeed Bobby Cremins as Georgia Tech coach, the Associated Press reported. Hewitt, 71-27 the past three years, rebuilt a Siena program that went 23-59 the three years before he arrived.

– Thousands of Michigan State fans crowded around the Capitol and packed Spartan Stadium to cheer their NCAA championship team.
