The St. Louis Cardinals intend to move to a new 50,000-seat ballpark within 10 years and called a news conference for Saturday to detail plans.

The new ballpark, just south of the 34-year-old Busch Stadium in downtown St. Louis, would cost $300 million to $350 million.

According to earlier reports, the Cardinals would pay for about one-third of the construction costs, with the rest paid by taxpayers.

Perez demoted: Carlos Perez, who went 2-10 with a 7.43 earned-run average last season, was sent down to the minors one day after getting knocked out in the fifth inning of his 2000 debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pitcher probed: Colorado Rockies pitcher John Thomson, on the disabled list because of shoulder surgery, could face drunken-driving charges after crashing into a house in Tucson, Ariz.

Thomson drove through the window of the house after striking a parked car Thursday, authorities said.

Pitcher signs: Cuban defector Adrian Hernandez, no relation to Orlando Hernandez but armed with a 93 m.p.h. fastball, said in Guatemala City he had agreed to a four-year contract with the New York Yankees.

Yankees representatives in Guatemala refused to comment. Yankees spokesman Rick Cerrone, with the team in Seattle, said he knew nothing about any signing.
