The Chicago City Council’s Human Relations and Finance Committees will hold a joint hearing Wednesday to consider whether descendants of African-American slaves deserve government reparations.

“Nationally known historians and expert witnesses” have been invited to speak, according to Ald. Dorothy Tillman (3rd), sponsor of a resolution that led to the decision to hold the joint hearing.

Reparations have become the subject of a national debate that supporters believe ultimately will be decided by Congress.
