The utility of the updated “disco bags” hasn’t changed in 20 years: They’re still to be worn across your body so you can dance all night with your hands free and have just enough essentials to make it through the evening, says Irenka Jakubiak, editor in chief of Accessories Magazine.
Those essentials? “Cell phone, lipstick, toothbrush, condoms, a platinum card and a $100 bill,” says Mary Norton, a handbag designer and founder of Charleston, S.C.-based Moo Roo. “They’re not for the woman who has a lot to tote but for the woman who treats her bags as jewelry.”
The newer bags are indeed richer, more dressed up, and often decorated with plumes, semi-precious stones, furs, crystal or pearls.
