Your April 14 editorial “Setback on transplants” is right on the mark. The Illinois State Medical Society applauds your take on the dilemma caused by the inequitable system now in place for allocating organs for transplantation. We are proud that our senators, Peter Fitzgerald and Richard Durbin, have co-sponsored the Organ Transplant Fairness Act of 2000 and introduced it to Congress on April 11. This crucial change in legislation would ensure that patients with the greatest medical need would be given priority over less-urgent patients to receive donated organs–regardless of the geographic boundaries. It puts patients first, not politics.
