Suspected rightist paramilitary gunmen barged into a seaside village and killed nine people they accused of being rebel informants, police said Saturday.
About 80 armed men carried out the attack early Friday in a town on the outskirts of Buenaventura, a Pacific seaport 215 miles west of Bogota, the capital.
Police said the assassins left spray-painted slogans indicating they were members of a “self-defense” group, the term Colombia’s rightist militias use to describe themselves.
Colombia’s national paramilitary umbrella organization claimed in a communique that 12 people were executed in Friday’s raid. Police put the figure at nine.
