Don’t expect accounts of shootouts in this chronicle of a year spent on the police force in a small town on Cape Cod, Mass. True, there’s an occasional car chase and even a waterfront drug heist, but for the most part, “Midnights” portrays the voices and routines of believable men. Author Alec Wilkinson was only 23 when he wrote the book (first published in 1982), but he conveys his experiences with wisdom and sophistication.
