Steel imports rise: U.S. April steel imports rose from a month ago despite tariffs imposed earlier this year to stagger sales of foreign steel to the United States. The Commerce Department said in a preliminary report that U.S. April steel imports rose 12.6 percent to 3.29 million metric tons from 2.92 million in March. April imports were also up 42.9 percent from 2.30 million metric tons imported in April 1999. March imports were revised upward from 2.85 million reported a month ago.
