It is always significant, as Memorial Day approaches, to read the accounts of heroes like Paul Tibbets (Tempo, Bob Greene, May 15, 16 and 17). Whether one is a Baby Boomer, a former anti-war citizen, a ban-the-bomb protester or not, I think that I and my fellow Americans cannot help but be uplifted and grateful that U.S. history produced such common-man bravery. In such men, there is no room for arrogance, cockiness. They are brave, honest, sensible, variously gifted and–despite the bloodiness of our past wars–lovers of kindness and freedom.
