Salim Muwakkil laments the sanctions still in place against Iraq. Mr. Muwakkil has conveniently forgotten the mass murder, rape and robbery committed by Iraq in Kuwait. Mr. Muwakkil has easily forgotten the massive ecological horror that Saddam Hussein unleashed on the world when he ignited the Kuwaiti oil wells. Perhaps he needs reminding that this murderous regime has used chemical weapons, repeatedly, against the Kurds, citizens of his own country.

The sanctions are harsh, but the government of Iraq has repeatedly demonstrated that it is willing to commit any evil for its own ends. The starving Iraqi POWs I took care of during the Gulf War can attest to how well Saddam takes care of his own. The cruel American military Mr. Muwakkil wrote about gave these men their own shoes, and treated them with compassion and dignity.
