An Orland Park man, convicted in Antigua for killing his wife by pushing her off the roof of a hotel on the island, committed suicide by hanging himself after his death sentence appeal was rejected, island court officials said Wednesday.
John Baughman, 58, was sentenced to die by hanging for the 1995 death of his 55-year-old wife, Velerie, while the couple were on a vacation. Baughman said Velerie stumbled while they were tossing love notes to each other.
The British Privy Council, the top court for the former colony, dismissed Baughman’s appeal of his death sentence last Thursday.
Baughman, a former Homewood police officer, was acquitted in 1985 of charges of killing his first wife, after he claimed that her death was an accident.
