South Africa’s president questioning conventional Western wisdom on using AZT to treat AIDS, as explained in the May 23editorial, may not be as ridiculous as it may seem. After 20 years of dealing with this epidemic, the Western industrial nations have not developed an effective vaccine nor cure for AIDS. The treatments now available, such as AZT, are toxic, unaffordable and still result in thousands of AIDS deaths annually. Let South African officials try it their way. Perhaps they can find a cure or simple, comfortable and inexpensive treatments for this disease. What do we have to lose except face and pharmaceutical company profits?
