I found the article “Parliament meets for 1st time with reformers in power” about Iran (News, May 28) highly offensive to the Jewish community here in the Chicago area. Your newspaper has not taken into consideration the 13 Jews who are wrongly incarcerated in Iran for fabricated spying charges. Iran is still a rogue state that holds people for political reasons, not criminal ones, and employs the most inhumane methods against its prisoners. The prosecution includes the presiding judge of the case. One of the accused is a shoe salesman and a few are rabbis. Two of the 13 arrested Jews were forced to confess on camera, which was then broadcast across the country and it is now feared that that will provoke more anti-Semitic sentiment against the Iranian Jewish population.
President Clinton has condemned the proceedings against these people, and many countries from around the world have threatened further sanctions against Iran. Your newspaper, however, continues to publish optimistic articles about Iran and ignores what’s really happening there. Please gain some perspective.
