Five people were killed and four were injured in two separate motor vehicle accidents early Saturday.

Three teenagers were killed and two were critically injured on the South Side when their car crashed into a utility pole on the 4600 block of South Western Avenue shortly before 5 a.m., according to Sgt. Maurice McCaster of the Major Accident Investigation Unit. The car was apparently racing another car when the driver lost control of the vehicle, McCaster said.

Fabian Gonzales, 19, and Ignacio Gonzales, 17, both of the 5300 block of South Springfield Avenue, died in the accident, McCaster said. Jose Martinez, 17, of the 6100 block of South Francisco Avenue, also died in the accident, McCaster said.

Carlos Zaragoza, 17, of the 4500 block of South Justine Street, was listed in critical condition at Cook County Hospital. Ubaldo Vega, 17, of the same block, was listed in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center.

In a second accident, a man and woman were killed after the sport-utility vehicle they were riding in collided with an Illinois Department of Transportation truck that was stopped on the shoulder of Interstate Highway 90.

The driver of the Isuzu Amigo, Guy Nadeau, 58, of Kingston, N.H., and the passenger, Angela Marshall, 33, of Forest Park, were pronounced dead at Lutheran General Hospital.

Nadeau was driving northbound on Interstate 90 near Bryn Mawr Avenue around 4:30 a.m. when his car hit an IDOT truck parked on the right shoulder with its emergency lights activated, said State Police Sgt. David Salinas. The IDOT employee, Albert Chapa, 49, and a passenger in the car, Hanif Rattani, 47, were treated at Resurrection Medical Center and released.
