Tom Hundley’s interview with Moammar Gadhafi (Page 1, May 28) was outstanding–a rare piece of American newspaper journalism reporting honestly on a figure so long regarded as a demon. Mr. Gadhafi demonstrates some remarkably astute observations. Reflection upon a few of these could profit us mightily.

His views on cruise-missile diplomacy highlight a particularly disturbing trend in American foreign policy. On the basis of some impatient ultimatum, or in some cases without an ultimatum and without adequate evidence for what we assert, we hurl these automated killing machines at others. There is absolutely no sense of moral authority or meaningful international leadership associated with such acts.

Now that we’ve heard from Mr. Gadhafi, perhaps the Tribune would do Americans the good service of providing other such interviews? You might start with our 40-year reigning devil-in-chief Fidel Castro. He is an intelligent and eloquent man. We do share the planet with billions of people. It’s not a bad idea sometimes to try to understand how they see us.
