Pinetop Perkins

Back on Top (Telarc)

At 87, the great Chicago pianist Pinetop Perkins isn’t as flashy and energetic as he was in the Muddy Waters Band for so many years. He’s content to let his own electric-blues quartet do most of the work on familiar blues-and-rock standards like “Hi-Heel Sneakers” and “Kansas City.” Though his gruff voice keeps the songs bright, he shows fire only in short bursts, such as the bum-ba-bum-ba opening to “Down In Mississippi.” These days, despite cameos by Corey Harris and harpist Sugar Ray Norcia, Perkins is much more effective by himself, when he can really stretch out.
