Jack Whittle, 69, a banking expert who formed a bank marketing consulting firm and was a columnist and author, died Friday, June 2, in his daughter’s home in Vernon Hills of complications from congestive heart disease. Mr. Whittle began his career at Continental Bank in 1960. He served as executive assistant to the chairman of the board and was later elevated to chief marketing officer. In the early 1960s, he served on Mayor Richard J. Daley’s Committee for Economic Development. He left Continental in 1974 to start The Whittle Group, a bank marketing consulting firm, where he worked until just before his death. “He worked with smaller-sized to medium-sized banks,” said his son, John. “He was widely known as a marketing expert. In bank marketing, his was a household name.” Mr. Whittle was also a past director and treasurer of the Bank Marketing Association, chairman of the American Bankers Association’s first marketing conference, a past chairman of WTMX-FM radio in Chicago and an instructor at six banking schools. He also worked as a columnist for the American Banker newspaper and for Bankers Magazine and was the author of more than 85 articles and books. He is also survived by a son, Jim; three daughters, Kathryn Fuentes, Nancy Myers and Christine Moffat; and nine grandchildren. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2727 W. Lake Ave., Wilmette.
