The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County will collect scrap tires from residents on Friday and Saturday. The event is co-sponsored by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Lake County Division of Transportation.
“If you would like to participate, there are several rules to follow,” said Monica Duebbert, SWALCO public information coordinator. Everyone who brings tires to the event must sign an agreement to not accumulate tires in the future. All tire rims must be removed from tires brought to the collection.
The tire turn-in is not open to dealers, retailers, gas stations and commercial trucking companies that accumulate tires while doing business, Duebbert said. Also, residents who have previously participated in Illinois EPA scrap-tire drop-off events cannot bring tires to this collection.
Tires will be accepted at no charge and will be recycled into crumb rubber items or other products, Duebbert said.
“The main focus on Friday will be on agriculturally generated tires as well as tires collected by local governments from fly dumping,” Duebbert said. Area farmers and municipal public works facilities are encouraged to load up their worn-out tires and bring them in.
Residents who want to recycle old car and truck tires should bring them to the collection site on Saturday to avoid longer wait times due to the number and types of tires that will come in Friday, Duebbert said.
Residents may bring in their tires from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Lake County Division of Transportation, 600 W. Winchester Rd., Libertyville. For more information, call 847-336-9340.
