The May 20 Tribune editorial page’s exposition of what are supposed to be privileged public health data is strange indeed. First it describes a woman “carrying a dead fetus” who “had no money to pay for an abortion.” This is absurd. Inducing labor in a woman carrying a dead fetus is not even an abortion.

It then discusses a woman with lupus, a serious disease but a disease as likely to improve as to deteriorate during pregnancy. Another abortion is described as having been done for “gall bladder disease,” a common but eminently treatable complication of pregnancy. Another is required for “injuries after attempting a self-inflicted abortion”–the old coat-hanger horror story of pro-choice mythology.

We should all hope that Gov. George Ryan’s daughters and granddaughters should never have their unborn children sacrificed for the spurious and preventable reasons fabricated by the Tribune in its tortured attempt to call for the governor’s veto of reasonable legislation.
