David Smith, 72, of St. Charles died Wednesday, June 7, in his home. Born in Carterville, Ill., Mr. Smith was a World War II Navy veteran. Prior to his retirement in 1992, he was employed at Geneva Kitchens and Hines Lumber. He was a longtime member of Geneva Local Carpenters Union and a member of Geneva American Legion Post 75. “I’m not sure what sparked his interest in carpentry, but it was probably his search for gainful employment,” said his son David Smith. Mr. Smith enjoyed working with his hands and over the years helped build kitchens in hundreds of homes in the Fox River Valley. “He did all kinds of home repairs, but his specialty was cabinetry work,” said his son. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed pro sports and dabbling in the stock market. “He always read two sections of the newspaper–sports and business,” said his son. “Playing the stock market was kind of a sport for him.” Other survivors include another son, Daniel; two sisters, Mabel Melmuka and Lucille Gaspar; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles.
