Patrick J. Hanley, 52, of Wheeling was a professor of physical education at Loyola University Chicago since 1972. Mr. Hanley, who was born in Highland Park, Mich., died Wednesday, June 7, in Resurrection Medical Center, Chicago, of complications from kidney cancer. Mr. Hanley received a master’s degree in physical education and history at Western Michigan University in 1971. “He stepped out of teaching for a while and ran the intramural building at Loyola in the early 1980s when it was new, but decided that teaching was in his blood and that was what he wanted to do,” said his wife, Diane J. “He was very much into education. He believed in it very strongly. He spoke to high school students on his own time to get them to go to college. He loved college sports. He really enjoyed teaching kids of all ages. He had a very good sense of humor.” Other survivors include a daughter, Rachel Christiansen; a brother, Richard; and five grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, when a service will begin, in Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Highway, Palatine.
