R. Bruce Dold must be so eager to endorse a Republican candidate for president that he is grasping at straws when he tells us that regardless of his intellectual flaws, George W. Bush’s instincts will carry him through as president (Commentary, June 4).
I fear his instincts more than I fear his lack of knowledge about everything a president needs to know to do his job to the benefit of the rest of us.
His political instincts, however, are superb. He knows how to raise huge amounts of money from wealthy contributors who want something from the government. As a businessman, he knew how to get wealthy investors to give him large amounts of money in spite of the fact that over and over again his investors lost money while hewalked away with millions.
During his tenure as governor, Texas has sunk to near bottom in education, health care and environmental conditions. This is in spite of the fact that Texas is among the wealthiest states.
His instincts are for self-promotion while those who will depend on his decisions will be left to swing in the wind.
