While going through the Chicago Tribune Internet site, I came across a very good article about the Ulster Unionist vote to re-enter the Northern Ireland Assembly (“Unionists OK IRA’s offer on disarmament,” May 28).
Although I enjoyed the article, there was one mistake I feel compelled to point out. Beside the article was a link to another page where it gave more information about the Northern Ireland Assembly. This page showed a sketch of Northern Ireland and a chart showing the shares the different parties have of the Northern Ireland Assembly. Unfortunately both map and chart have an Irish Tricolour imposed behind them.
This is wrong, as Northern Island is part of Britain and not the Republic of Ireland. So obviously the flag that should have been used is the Union Jack.
I know if the article had been about the Republic of Ireland (my country and proud of it), and there was a drawing of Ireland with a Union Jack in the background, I would have been very annoyed.
Personally I hope to see the day when Ireland is united under the Irish flag. Until then I will respect the wishes of the majority of the people of Northern Ireland to fly the Union Jack.
