After a new residential condominium proposal met with community resistance, developer Henry Woo of HAP Developers has submitted a modified residential development proposal for a site at 1546 N. Orleans St. in Old Town.

Woo originally proposed 50 to 60 units in a 14-story, glass and steel building. In March, local residents objected to the plan, complaining it did not comply with the turn-of-the-century look that predominates along North Orleans Street and with the character of Old Town overall. They asked Woo to lower the height and to alter the materials.

Last week the developer presented new plans for a brick facade, 10-story building with decorative balcony railings and other architectural details that give the building a neo-classical look.

“It’s more in keeping with the architectural character of Orleans Street. The zoning and government relations panel of the Chamber of Commerce liked it very much,” said Paula Barrington, executive director of the Old Town Chamber of Commerce.

She says the project will go before the chamber’s board of directors in July.
