William L. Hurtt Sr., 84, of Leesburg, Fla., formerly a resident of Des Plaines for more than 50 years, retired in 1985 as a credit collection manager in the Chicago banking industry after more than 30 years of service. Mr. Hurtt, a Chicago native, died Thursday, June 8, in Leesburg. Mr. Hurtt received a Silver Beaver award from the Northwest Suburban Council of the Boy Scouts of America, in the 1980s, for more than 35 years of service. Mr. Hurtt, a Republican precinct captain for Chicago’s 49th Ward in the late 1940s and early 1950s, later received a congressional award from U.S. Rep. John Porter (R-Ill.) for seven years of service to the Maine Township Youth Commission, of which he was a member. “Bill was a survivor and had a feisty love of life,” said his daughter-in-law Judith Hurtt. “He drove a stock car in the ’40s and ’50s. He raced at Soldier Field. He loved cars. He was a pinochle player and a Lionel train collector.” Other survivors include three sons, William L. Jr., Richard and Steven, and six grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. Wednesday to the time of services at 11 a.m. in Christ Church, 1492 Henry Ave., Des Plaines.
