How many ties and power drills does one dad need? As an alternative to showering the patriarch with stereotypical gifts, here are some Father’s Day events involving cars, trains and food:
– Some 65 Porsches, new and vintage, go on display at 9 a.m. Sunday at the east end of Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave. Free admission. 312-595-7437. Also Sunday, granddads may remember the older models–such as a 1930 L-29 Cord Speedster, a 1936 Packard V-12 Convertible Sedan and early-20th Century children’s pedal cars–at the free 32nd Annual Classic Car Show, 11 a.m. Sunday at Oakbrook Center, Illinois Highway 83 and Cermak Road, Oak Brook. 630-573-0700.
– No matter where you stand on the quiche issue, “Real Men Cook” is a social philosophy every father can support. It’s also an event (sponsored by the Tribune) at 3 p.m. Sunday at the South Shore Cultural Center, 71st Street and South Shore Drive. Some 200 men will don chefs’ hats and prepare their favorite dishes for the thousands of family members expected to attend. Tickets are $20 ($10 for children 12 and under), and all proceeds go to charity. 312-559-1212.
– Finally, for dads sick of taking the Red Line to the Loop, much cooler trains are on display at the Illinois Railway Museum, which offers free Father’s Day admission. The McHenry County museum, which opens at 10 a.m., is at 7000 Olsen Rd., Union. 815-923-4391.
