An old elementary school game will be elevated to a new level next month when the Schaumburg Park District holds its first dodge ball tournament.
According to Mary Beth Thaman, superintendent of recreation for the Park District, the idea for a “Dodge Ball Days” tournament followed discussions with the Greater Woodfield Convention Bureau about finding something different the village could offer.
“We have the shopping district that draws a lot of people here, but nothing in the way of a unique landscape or anything like that,” Thaman said. “We wanted to do something here in Schaumburg that few, if any, communities, had done.”
Lou Mengsol, director of sports marketing for the bureau, said officials hope that “Dodge Ball Days” would eventually expand to a weekend-long event.
“We’re always looking for ways to expand tourism here in the village as well as help it generate revenue, and we feel this event will have great appeal to youth as well as adults,” Mengsol said. “We’ve already been promised some corporate sponsorships and had a number of inquiries from corporations about fielding teams.”
The one-day tournament will be on July 29 at Olympic Park. A minimum of six players is required per team, with a maximum of four additional players. Cost is $10 a person, or $90 for teams with 10 players.

Preview dodge ball games will be offered before Flyers baseball games Thursday and July 7, 14 and 24.
A booth with team registration forms will be available for fans.
