It is interesting that Sawraj Singh, M.D., (“India’s population woes,” Voice of the people, June 15) blames India’s overpopulation and attendant woes on outside forces, namely developing countries. Dr. Singh denies the reality of a culture that refused to change a centuries-old caste system, which has spawned a modern ghetto of enormously poor people. Dr. Singh doesn’t look internally to fix the political and socioeconomic realities of a jingoistic, male-dominated country with a corrupt, inept government and extremist religious factions, which incite chaos and deny women the right to use birth control, become educated, hold jobs or own businesses. Instead Dr. Singh helps the Indian people deny accountability for their own situation.
