NEW YORK–The NFL officially suspended Josh Evans of the Tennessee Titans for the 2000 season following a third violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy.
Evans, a defensive lineman who started for the Titans in the Super Bowl last season, won’t be eligible for reinstatement until next February, the league said Tuesday.
A report from CBS’ Sportsline.com, meanwhile, said that the Titans are considering Reggie White as a replacement.
White, 38, who played college football at Tennessee, retired from the Green Bay Packers after the 1998 season as the NFL’s career sacks leader. According to the Web site, sources close to the future Hall of Fame lineman said there is interest, but no substantive negotiations have taken place.
The Sportsline.com report said, however, that White has spoken with Titans coach Jeff Fisher about how he could be used to take maximum advantage of his skills.
Evans, a five-year NFL veteran, missed the first four games of the 1999 season while serving a suspension for his second substance-abuse violation. He was told in March that he failed the most recent drug test.
Evans started 10 games and had 54 tackles and 3 sacks. He also started four playoff games, including Super Bowl XXXIV against St. Louis.
